Raiders sign running back Isaiah Crowell, linebacker Brandon Marshall

ALAMEDA — The Raiders got some company for Jalen Richard in the running back room Thursday by bringing aboard running back Isaiah Crowell, and also added depth at linebacker with the signing of Brandon Marshall.

Crowell, 26, is a durable five-year veteran who has 3,083 yards rushing in four seasons with the Cleveland Browns and last season with the New York Jets. He could make up to $2.5 million on a one-year deal.

Marshall, 29, played in 11 games with the Broncos last season with 11 starts and in 2017 led the Broncos in tackles. His contract could be worth up to $4.1 million.

Both contracts were first reported by ESPN and confirmed by the Bay Area News Group.

Last season’s leading rushers, Marshawn Lynch and Doug Martin, are both unrestricted free agents and Lynch’s status is further clouded by a serious groin injury that ended his 2018 season.

Crowell gained 685 yards last season in 13 games with six starts, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. A 16-game starter for Cleveland in 2016 and 2017, Crowell gained 1,805 yards and scored nine touchdowns. At 5-foot-11, 225 pounds, Crowell is the kind of move-the-chains runner who could fill the Lynch/Martin role in coach Jon Gruden’s offense.

The lone running back with extensive playing time on the roster before Crowell’s arrival is Jalen Richard, who has been used primarily as what Gruden terms a “satellite” back whose biggest strength is as a receiver out of the backfield.

Gruden addressed the need for a running back Monday at the NFL owners meeting.

“We’re looking for three-down back, a guy that can play in any situation,” Gruden said. “A guy that can catch it, a guy that can pick up blitzes, that can run in the first and the fourth quarter. A guy that has got some durability and versatility is the big thing. They’re hard to find. You’ve got to have a certain size about you that you can take punishment and deliver punishment.”

For his career, Crowell has 117 receptions for 922 yards and a touchdown with a career high of 40 receptions for 319 yards in 2016.

Other running backs on the roster aside from Richard include DeAndre Washington, Chris Warren and James Butler and fullbacks Keith Smith and Ryan Yurachek.

Marshall, a starter for Denver from 2014 through 2018, joins Vontaze Burfict as inside linebackers acquired by the Raiders within the last week.

Other linebackers on the roster include Tahir Whitehead, Marquel Lee, Nicholas Morrow, Jason Cabinda and Kyle Wilber, although Wilber’s role is primarily as a special teams player.

Crowell and Marshall, in addition to trade acquisition Antonio Brown and free agent tackle Trent Brown, are all clients of agent Drew Rosenhaus.
