Runway repair causes flight delays at SFO

SAN FRANCISCO — Some air travelers going into and out of San Francisco International Airport ran into delays Thursday after workers discovered damage to one of the runways, an airport spokesman said.

Workers on the airport’s airfield team found a 12-inch pavement depression on Runway 28L during an inspection at dawn, spokesman Doug Yakel said. The repairs began at 8 a.m. and Yakel said the runway would remain closed at least through 3 p.m.

A second runway — Runway 1R — also was closed during the repairs. It will not open until after noon, Yakel said.

Flights were running an average of about 35 minutes late, Yakel said. The travel board also showed a handful of cancellations, but those were not necessarily because of the runway issues, he said.

Passengers were advised to call ahead to check on the status of their flight.
