Jeff McNeil Sets A Mets Franchise Record
Jeff McNeil, 27, made his major league debut with the Mets on July 24th, 2018. During the 2018 season, McNeil played for both the Double-A Binghamton Mets and the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. Before his call-up, McNeil was having an incredible amount of success, hitting .342/.411/.617.
His first big league hit came as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning of the Mets 6-3 win against the San Diego Padres. Jeff got to the plate and smacked the first pitch he saw into shallow center field for a base hit. The ball, at this moment, sits in a case comfortably in his mother’s home.
McNeil has been on a tear ever since the call up leading to his new franchise record he set the Mets 11-7 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night. Jeff started the game tied with former Met, Jose Reyes, for the most hits in his first 76 career games with 88 hits.
He tied the record in the second with a single to center, and then broke it in the seventh with a base hit to left field. McNeil went two for five in this game which gives him 90 hits in his first 76 games, two over the previous record.
The record was set in 2003 and began for Reyes in his call up on June 10th of that year, the day before his 20th birthday. Although the Mets lost the game to the Texas Rangers, Reyes went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
With the tear that Jeff McNeil has been on since coming to the majors batting .335/.391/863 , I am positive this will not be the last Mets record that McNeil breaks.
