Mets Recall Paul Sewald from Syracuse, Option Corey Oswalt

0

According to Tim Healey of Newsday, the New York Mets have optioned pitcher Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Syracuse and have recalled reliever Paul Sewald.

This move comes after Oswalt pitched 3.2 innings in relief to Jason Vargas on Saturday night against the Atlanta Braves. Oswalt gave up five runs on six hits while walking four and striking out two in the Mets 11-7 loss.

In four appearances in Triple A this season, Sewald is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.250 WHIP and four strikeouts in four innings. This move comes as kind of a surprise due to the fact that Sewald is 0-13 with a combined 5.25 ERA, 4.23 FIP, and 1.509 WHIP in 103 games for the Mets over the past two seasons.

The club could just be looking to get a fresh arm in their pen for now until they figure out what they are going to do about their fifth starter problem. As Mickey Callaway previously stated Sunday morning, Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman could be potential options to fill this role.

For now, Sewald will get another chance to audition in the Mets bullpen. Only time will tell whether this transaction turns out to be more than just a minor move, but the team still has several options waiting in the wings with the likes of Tyler Bashlor, Daniel Zamora, and Anthony Kay should they have to shift a reliever into the rotation and add another arm in the pen.
