DeGrom Pushed Back To Saturday, Vargas Will Pitch Friday

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that Jacob deGrom has strep throat and will not start on Friday as initially planned as a result. Instead, he will pitch on Saturday and Jason Vargas will take his spot.

Both starters will face off against the St. Louis Cardinals and be pitching on five days rest.

Many had hoped Vargas would not even be getting a start this week at all, with Mickey Callaway not giving any guarantees about his rotation spot after Saturday’s game in which he only recorded one out while giving up four runs, two hits, and three walks to raise his ERA to 14.21.

DeGrom lasted five innings in his last start and gave up three runs, five hits, and four walks while striking out nine batters.
