27x1 1/8" vs 27x1 1/4" vs 27x1
I have a '75 Schwinn Sports Tourer that I put NOS 27" Mavic G40 wheels on, they're 40-spoke rims, front and rear,
the front has a clunky looking new Shimano tandem hub, and the rear has a NOS basic Sansin hub, hubs are also each 40h.
I have 27x1 1/4" folding Pasela protite tires on the rims, and feel like the bike is a slug. Seems to drag, is harder to bring up to speed, and is just generally slower.
I have another Sports Tourer, a '71 with inexpensive 36-spoke Sun CR18 rims (with Formula sealed / cartridge bearing hubs), and Panaracer Urban Max 27 x 1 1/8" tires,
that seems much zipper. I think my average speed is ~ 2 mph faster, and it has steel fenders, where the slow bike does not.
The faster '71 also has modern brakes and barcon shifters vs original Weinmann center pull and Twin Stiks on the slow '75 -- otherwise they're pretty much the same, same 24" frame size (slow is Sky Blue fast is Kool Lemon :)).
My friend who is a bike mechanic (who also built the Mavic wheels) said the Pasela protite 27x1 1/4 tires were slow tires (slow tread pattern and wide) ... I took that with a grain of salt, but don't yet subscribe to the wider and low pressure is better craze.
I'm planning on trying some normal 27x1" Paselas, does anyone have experience with these?
Could it be the newer CR18s with the Formula hubs are just better?
Is it 36-spokes vs 40-spokes, or is my wider tires?
Could the frame be more of a dog than the faster one?
I do have one bike with 700c 23mm Gatorskins that seems pretty zippy.
In lieu of the Pasela 1" tires, I may try another set of 27x 1 1/8" Urban Max tires (which I really like).
