Letter: Former Gov. Weld hasn’t sold out to Trump
Re: “Why no one is asking what GOP will do about Trump”
(Commentary, Opinion section, April 24)
Paul Krugman is right about Republican abdication of responsibility.
But there is a Republican who has not sold out to Trump: former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who announced his candidacy for president on April 15, saying the country is in “grave peril” from the Trump presidency.
Weld should be taken seriously. As a Republican governor in the highly Democratic state of Massachusetts, he won re-election by an all-time record of 71 percent of the vote, while maintaining a stance of fiscal conservatism that used to be a Republican trademark.
If Mr. Krugman is really concerned about the survival of America because of the Republican abdication of responsibility, he could help by noting Bill Weld’s presence as a Republican alternative to Trump. The more respect that can be shown to Weld’s courageous effort, the better the chance that other Republicans can be inspired to show some character.
