Last week, the sad news broke that Boys N The Hood filmmaker John Singleton suffered a stroke at age 51. He was then placed into a medically-induced coma and was removed from life support by his family on Monday. NBC News now reports that Singleton, the first Black filmmaker to be nominated for a directing Oscar, passed away this afternoon after family confirmed circulating reports to that effect.
Singleton’s talent agency, ICM Partners, issued a statement to further confirm the sad news. “He was a visionary filmmaker and social commentator who created a path for a new generation of filmmakers,” the statement read. “Many of whom he mentored, in a way they never saw possible.”
