SUCCESS IN THE FRED PERRY AND UDEN

The Fred Perry Team were away to Balbriggan and playing in the almost hurricane winds Managed to secure a vital away win to add to the two points secured in Hollywood and take the match 3-2.

     Much interest  has been generated in this competition, with many h/cap combinations available to managers Balbriggan opted to use players ranging from a low of +2 to a high of 18. We preferred to go with players between 10 to 19. This strategy paid off on this occasion but is not guaranteed to be a winning formula, However  we remain in fray and have the opportunity to put it to test in the next round, at Home to Laytown BettysTown.  Great Credit is due  to the panel for achieving this fantastic “Away” win, and thanks to the home and away supporters who braved the elements to support the team. 

Sunday saw our Uden Cup Team in action in their 1st round match away to Sutton GC. Although a bitterly cold day, the winds had dropped and it seemed quite benign by comparison to the Storms that beset the Fred Perry match. The early loss of one  home match and an away match rocked our team and supporters and we looked like we could be going out. But the fighting spirit of the lakes, fuelled no doubt by our recent successes seemed to spur us on. Out on the Sutton coast our 2nd pairing  were fighting back and when we took the 2nd home point  things were definitely getting brighter. The home tie now decided, all eyes turned to the sea. Our  third pairing in Sutton took two holes in quick succession and were dormie 3 up. Now we had  a chance, the score standing at 2-2 and our last pair Gerry Doherty and Ambrose McCann were dormie 1 up on the final hole. The tension was unbelievable when Ambrose’s second went through the green, with Gerry finding  a deep gulley off to the left. The opposition were well placed looking at a  birdie putt. Gerry Played first and with a sublime chip shot left himself an 8ft par putt. Up next Ambrose’s attempt surprisingly pulled up 12 ft short. The Sutton Player stepped up to his putt, knowing that a two putt would force a play off, he took aim and also pulled up short, but with only 2ft left looked favourite for the hole. Ambrose, next to play his putt seeming to be growing longer by the minute, taking only the briefest look at the line struck the ball and watched it make its way down hill to the hole, the roar went up even before the ball reached the bottom of the cup. This was a huge win, well done again to the Uden Panel and to the supporters at both venues.
