Brandy Melville accused of damaging teen girls’ body image with one-size-fits-all clothing policy that’s just a UK size FOUR
FASHION label Brandy Melville has been slammed for its one-size-fits-all clothing line this week, with mums and shoppers calling it “damaging”.
The brand – which was founded 10 years ago in the US and has recently appeared in the UK – stocks a range of tops, skirts and jeans with most styles available in just one (tiny) size.
Now, shoppers – and especially mums of teenage daughters – are growing increasingly concerned over the message this sends to “vulnerable” and “body conscious” young women.
Writing in The Sunday Times this weekend, journalist India Knight explained the idea of a one-size-fits-all clothes policy is “unhealthy” for teens.
Speaking about her own daughter’s love of Brandy Melville, India explained that while the brand’s tops are often stretchy enough to fit a range of sizes, the trousers and bottoms are not.
“[This] means that middle-class teenage girls — the particular demographic that, in my view, is disproportionately prone to anorexia — had better be pin thin if they want to buy trendy middle-class girls’ clothing,” she explained.
Adding that shoppers need to be “small waisted and very leggy” India explained that while her size 4 daughter fits the clothing now, if she gets even slightly bigger, she will not.
“As a result [the clothes] are likely to make her feel quite fat, and maybe she’ll be tempted to do something about it. How insane is that?” She wrote.
Over the last couple of years, other shoppers have expressed similar concerns over the brand.
Raksha Sen, a junior at Saint Francis High School in America told Mercury News that she was left shocked and disappointed when none of Brandy Melville’s clothes fitted her.
“You feel uncomfortable returning the clothes. When the cashier asks you why you’re returning them, you have to say that they’re too small for your body,” she revealed.
The brand is loved by celebs too, with the likes of Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber having been spotted in the designs.
“People see models that wear this type of clothing, and they feel like they need to have that type of body to be on trend,” explained another student.
While the majority of the site’s items are one-sized, the brand does sell a number of pieces in small and medium.
One pair of jeans has a 22-inch waist – which is a tiny UK size 2 – with the same style going up to a “medium” 26-inch waist – or a size 8 in the UK.
Fabulous Online has contacted Brandy Melville for comment.
