Sheff Wednesday fans furious as club congratulate arch-rivals Sheff Utd on promotion
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY have congratulated their arch rivals Sheffield United on promotion to the Premier League – and Owls fans are furious.
On Sunday United players and staff partied inside Bramall Lane after their promotion to the Premier League was officially confirmed.
Leeds’ draw at home to Aston Villa ensured the Blades are back in the big time following a 12-year absence.
Following the promotion rivals Wednesday released a statement which read: “Few things in life unite and divide opinion like football.
“But one thing at this stage of every season is undebatable and I would like to offer the warm congratulations of everyone at Sheffield Wednesday to everyone at our neighbours Sheffield United for their achievement of promotion.
“We may be rivals but we are friends of the same city that holds such unique tradition in the football world.
“Recognition in the Premier League can only benefit Sheffield and we wish United well, whilst promising our loyal supporters that we will be giving our absolute best to ensure Wednesday will be tasting the same success this time next year.”
FANS FUME
The respect and sportsmanship the club showed was not reciprocated by Wednesday fans on Twitter – with some urging the post to be deleted.
One said: “Are you doing refunds on season tickets again next season? Asking for meself.”
Another said: “You are not representing our fan base with this tweet. I do not wish them any congratulations for anything I do not want them to have any luck whatsoever ever.
“They have been taking the piss and showing what little to no class they have since confirmed. Delete this tweet now!
One commented: “Worst club statement to be issued by any club, ever.”
The Blades were not looking to follow in the footsteps of rivals Wednesday, as Chris Wilder taunted the “muppets” at bitter rivals Leeds and roared: “Who’s got the bottle now?”
