Fatality after CHP pursuit causes Bay Bridge commute delays
SAN FRANCISCO — A motorcyclist being pursued Tuesday morning across the Bay Bridge by the California Highway Patrol died after crashing into a truck, causing extensive commuter delays, officials said.
The name of the motorcyclist has not been released.
The CHP said the motorcyclist was fleeing from an officer who tried to stop him about 7:35 a.m. for a traffic violation in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near the bridge toll plaza.
The motorcyclist crashed into a truck just east of Fremont Street on the San Francisco side of the bridge, the CHP said. He died later from his injuries.
A Sig Alert that closed at least two lanes of the bridge so that the CHP could investigate the crash was issued about 7:42 a.m., causing long delays for commuters. It was not known when the alert would be lifted.
