Readers show ex-Vogue boss Alexandra Shulman that you are never too old for a bustier
SHE once edited British style bible Vogue, but now Alexandra Shulman has committed the ultimate fashion faux pas – by blasting 50-year-old model Helena Christensen for wearing a sexy lace bustier on a night out.
Alexandra, 61, said the Danish beauty – who has appeared on the cover of British Vogue six times – only wore the top “to show she’s not past it,” adding the bold claim that “no stylish young woman would ever dream of wearing” the racy style.
Helena’s model friends leapt to her defence, with Naomi Campbell calling the comment a “cheap shot”.
We couldn’t help but agree with Naomi – so we asked four women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s to prove that bustiers have no age limit.
It seems that celebs agree – and on the right we rate some famous names for busting out the bustier, plus our Fashion Editor gives her view.
‘I’m still wearing it when I turn 50’
SINGLE Freya Wilson is a customer service adviser who lives in Greenwich, South East London.
She says:”I’ve worn something similar for my birthday, and don’t see anything wrong with Helena glamming up in one.
Plus, it is surprisingly comfortable and not as scary to wear as it might seem.
There shouldn’t be an age limit to what we wear. I wear things like this now, and I don’t plan to stop when 7 I turn 50.”

‘The outfit is stylish and sophisticated – I love it’
ALEESHA HANSEL from Birmingham is single and works in TV production.
She says: “I wouldn’t have worn something like this before but I love this outfit now — it’s styled in a sophisticated way.
I don’t think Helena’s bustier was tacky, like Alexandra Shulman said it was.
She looked fantastic and those comments about her were simply unnecessary.
If a supermodel still gets slated for her outfits, then what hope is there for the rest of us?
I’m glad she hasn’t paid any attention and isn’t rushing to cover up 7 because of one person.”
Aleesha wears:
- Nude bustier, H&M, £19.99 – buy now
- Slip skirt, M&S, £35 – buy now
- Brown heels, New Look, £19.99 – buy now
‘It’s so glam I feel like I’m in Sex and The City’
ANTIQUES dealer Amanda Holly is married and lives in Hadley Wood, North London.
She says:’Sometimes I don’t feel brave enough to wear something like this, being nearly 50.
But seeing Helena wear a bustier has encouraged me to go for it. When you’re older you know what works for your body, and she can wear anything. I’m an advocate for women empowering other women, instead of being negative about them.
I feel like I could be in Sex And The City — the bustier is very glamorous. Why shouldn’t we be 7 able to wear it?’
Amanda wears:
- Purple bustier, lovehoney.co.uk, £39.99 – buy now
- Trousers, Topshop, £30 – buy now
