Top Rank signs welterweight prospect Brian Mendoza

The Albuquerque-born fighter makes his debut with the company on Saturday.

25-year-old welterweight prospect Brian “La Bala” Mendoza has signed a deal with Top Rank, and will make his debut with the company this Saturday in Stockton, California, part of the prelim portion of the Beterbiev-Kalajdzic card.

Prelims will start at 6:30 pm ET, streaming on ESPN+, with the main card starting at 10 pm ET on ESPN.

Mendoza has a record of 16-0 (11 KO), turning pro in May 2014 in Pojoaque, New Mexico. The Albuquerque native has fought in all kinds of places that aren’t exactly within boxing’s spotlight — Pojoaque and Hobbs and Rio Rancho in New Mexico; Springfield, Virginia; Dodge City, Kansas; Green Bay, Wisconsin. The TV lights at the Stockton Arena on Saturday should be a nice change of pace.

So should fighting at all, actually, as Mendoza has been inactive since Nov. 2017. To date, he hasn’t really fought anyone, but Top Rank doesn’t sign anyone they don’t think can fight. Just by signing with Top Rank, he’s someone who should at least be on your radar now.
