A’s injury updates: Trivino, Olson shake rust pregame at Fenway Park
BOSTON – Lou Trivino took what looks to be the final step to returning to gameday action following a successful live BP session at Fenway Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The right-handed reliever, who has been sidelined with a thumb injury since April 17, completed his session with the approval of his manager, who expects to have him available for the series finale on Wednesday afternoon.
“I didn’t see many guys taking swings off him today,” said Bob Melvin. “I thought it went well. It’s a prudent thing to do. He has not thrown in a while. We’ve kept him on the roster and to just say, “Here’s the eighth inning for you in your first outing,” I don’t know that was the proper way to go about it. Had him face some hitters today, he felt pretty good. Good chance he’ll be in there tomorrow.”
Prior to the injury, Trivino made 12 appearances for the club, going 1-0 with 7 holds, a 1.42 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings.
One of his victims on Tuesday was another Oakland player on the mend in Matt Olson, who continues to progress positively since late-March surgery on his hand.
The A’s first baseman was able to get in some hacks in Boston prior to jumping on a plane to meet up with Triple-A Las Vegas in Reno, where he will begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday.
“He took some BP today and stood in there against Lou, saw some live pitching off of him,” Melvin stated. “He will fly today, and he’ll be playing first base tomorrow.”
While the team has hit a bumpy patch in the face of an ever-growing injured list, Melvin and company cautioned that it would be wise to let Olson, who has played only two games this season, get his footing fully before rushing him back to the big club.
“I just want him to feel comfortable and see the ball well,” said the Oakland skipper. “We have to resist the urge of trying to get him back here as quickly as we can because he’s been out for a while.”
