Hundreds of jobs at Argos at risk after shake-up of middle management roles

HUNDREDS of jobs are at risk at Argos amid a bosses’ shake-up.

Argos has up to six middle managers at each of its 830 stores but will slash that to two.

The retailer, owned by struggling Sainsbury’s, wants to avoid compulsory layoffs by offering alternative roles. They would include office jobs, other in-store work or equivalent positions at Sainsbury’s.

But it is feared hundreds will still be axed. The revamp will hit the group of bosses below each branch’s head chief.

They currently perform a range of duties including customer service, managing stock and leading teams.

Those who survive the cull will get more res-ponsibility in new roles as trading and trading support managers. The revamp, aimed at cutting “overlap”, has gone to consultation with staff.

Argos said: “We are proposing more streamlined store management teams. It would create broader, more clearly defined roles that allow us to better support colleagues and serve customers.

“Those affected are being considered for up- dated management positions. There will be opportunities to redeploy to other roles in the group.”

Sainsbury’s bought Argos, which has around 30,000 staff, in 2016.
