The shock finding raised fresh fears over Theresa May’s decision to let Huawei build Britain’s 5G mobile network, ignoring concerns over spying and hacking.
Tory MP Bob Seely said the new revelations were “more reason to think again”. He added: “This is about who is in control of the 5G network, and who has control of that information is going to be very powerful.”
Vodafone said it had found vulnerabilities while testing equipment supplied to its Italian business by Huawei. But it said they had been fixed as long ago as 2012. And it denied the flaws were a “back door” for hackers to get into home networks.
The UK firm said it had accidentally been left in the equipment when they should have been removed. Huawei said: “We were made aware of historical vulnerabilities in 2011 and 2012 and they were addressed at the time.”
