Politicians trust ‘babalawos’ more than security officials - DSS DG

Yusuf Bichi, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS), says some politicians do not trust security officials. According to him, they have more confidence in marabouts.

Bichi said this on Tuesday, April 30, at a retreat for incoming governors organised by the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF).

The DSS boss said many politicians invest their trust in marabouts and “babalawos” to tackle insecurity, The Cable reports.

“I joke with politicians that you people trust the marabouts and babalawos more. Once someone tells you nothing will happen to your seat and it happens you just trust that person in all crisis,” he said.

According to him, the notion that there is lack of intelligence to tackle security challenges in the country is false, saying the problem is rather an inaction and lack of will on the part of those who should act.

Bichi said there was a disconnect between the formal and traditional leadership structures which is responsible for the disconnect at the grassroots in intelligence gathering.

The DSS boss added that local government chairmen were not paying adequate attention to security. He said most of them do not hold security meetings to know what is happening in their localities.

In another report, the DSS called for inter-agency collaboration to tackle contemporary security threats confronting the country.

Legit.ng reported that the DG of DSS, at a meeting of Forum of Spokesmen of Security and Response Agencies (FOSSRA) on Thursday, April 25, in Abuja said, the current security challenges confronting the nation required joint efforts to combat them.
