Gunmen release 2 Shell oil workers in Rivers

- Two Shell oil workers kidnapped in Nigeria’s restive oil-rich south have been freed

- The staff were kidnapped on Thursday, April 25, while coming from neighbouring Bayelsa state

- Nnamdi Omoni, the state police spokesperson, however, confirmed their release

The police in Rivers state on Wednesday, May 1, confirmed the release of two Shell oil workers six days after they were seized by gunmen who killed their guard and driver.

Vanguard reports that the police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed their release said: “The two oil workers who were abducted by a gang of hoodlums last week have both been rescued from their abductors.”

“The rescue of the oil workers was facilitated by the gallant efforts of operatives of the tactical team of the Rivers state police command.”

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that two senior oil workers of Shell Nigeria were on on Thursday, April 25, kidnapped after they were ambushed by unknown gunmen in Rivers state. The Nation reports that two police escorts were also killed in the attack.

It was reported that the incident happened along the Ahoada-Ndele-Rumuji-Emohua axis of the East-West road.

The duo was returning from an official trip from the neighbouring Bayelsa state when they were attacked by the gunmen. A source in Shell who spoke on the condition of anonymity also confirmed the attack.

In related development, Legit.ng reported that some unknown gunmen abducted two Chinese nationals who were working on a road project in Ohaozara local government Area of Ebonyi.

The two Chinese nationals, identified as Sun Zhixin and Wang Quing Hu, are employees of the Tongyi Construction Company.

The report have it that both men were at a place called Ivo River when their abductors invaded the site with arms, forced the workers out of the pit and took the Chinese men to an unknown destination.
