Trust Me’s Katie Clarkson-Hill reveals troubled Zoe could be driven to suicide by scheming fiance Alex as she and Jamie close in on serial killer

TRUST Me’s Dr Zoe Wade could end up killing herself after manipulative boyfriend Alex Kiernan leaves her riddled with self-doubt as she investigates six sinister deaths inside a hospital’s neurological unit.

The bubbly young doctor has come under fire from her mysterious boss Archie Watson [John Hannah] and her controlling boyfriend [Richard Rankin] after teaming up with injured army corporal Jamie McCain [Alfred Enoch] to expose the suspiciously high mortality rate on the ward.

With a history of mental illness including a failed suicide attempt that left her in intensive care for three months, Zoe’s supposedly fragile state of mind is being preyed upon by the two domineering men.

And with aspiring consultant Alex’s true psychotic nature exposed in last night’s episode when he brutally jabbed a needle around in Jamie’s arm and forced him to have a dangerously high does of a sedative, Zoe could be at risk.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, Katie said: “She puts so much into being a great doctor and I think there is definitely danger of her getting pushed to a place where she can’t see a way out, because she’s been there before.

“She doesn’t have any support, she doesn’t have anyone but Jamie, and that’s it. So, she has nobody around her. Even the person that she loves, that she lives with, she shares a bed with, she’s got no support from him either so there’s definite danger of her falling back into that dark place.”

After confiding in Alex that she suspects someone working on the ward is responsible for six abnormal deaths in eight months, Zoe was left stunned by her boyfriend’s refusal to believe her.

Dismissing the news as a fantasy concocted by Jamie in the throes of post traumatic stress disorder, Alex reminded his girlfriend she was still in recovery from her own issues and needed help.

His manipulative behaviour came to the fore once again later in the episode as he pressured Zoe into having sex after she said she was too tired.

Alex has become jealous of Zoe’s developing bond with Jamie. While carrying out an act of savage brutality on the bed-stricken corporal, Alex reiterated that he intends to tie the knot with Zoe.

His overbearing attitude and desperate gaslighting are threatening to overwhelm Zoe, who can’t help but doubt herself.

Katie explained: “Alex knows what buttons to press. He knows what her weak spots are and I think he and Watson both know how to get to Zoe.

“They talk about this history of mental illness as something that they use against her quite a lot. Even though shes OK, she’s gone through it, she’s back at work, she’s done her job to the best of her ability and she’s a very good doctor, they do use that against her to get her to doubt herself and to get her to kind of feel less than them.

“They completely manipulate her into feeling weak and feeling like she doesn’t know what shes talking about, even though she does. They don’t let her forget that she’s been through that.”

Despite Alex’s questionable behaviour, Katie does think it comes from a place of love.

She continued: “I do think he loves her, but he says those things in a way where he’s actually saying, ‘listen to me, I know better than you, you’re not well, you’re not right, you don’t know.’

“He does use it to manipulate her a lot and, as episode 4 comes up, we see her weaken under the pressure of him and the pressure of nobody listening to her. She kind of draws into herself a bit and its quite a dangerous place for her to be.”

Next week’s series finale will likely see viewers discover what happened to Jamie during the patrol that left him paralysed and his team members dead, while unravelling the mystery of the hospital deaths in scenes that Katie called “close to the bone”.

“I think it’s still anybodies game,” said Katie. “They’ve all kind of showed themselves to be somewhat unprofessional.

“That scene with Jamie and Alex, you wonder what Alex could really be capable of?

“What you see with Watson, where is the line with them? How far will they go? So I think at the moment everyone is quite dangerous.”

So far Zoe’s relationship with Jamie has been strictly platonic; two kindred spirits determined to expose multiple murders.

Both have experienced or witnessed domestic abuse, with Jamie raised in a house of violence while Zoe is being forced to question herself at every turn because of manipulating Alex. They’ve also both had serious battles with mental health and know what’s it’s like to feel alone.

As their private investigation brings them closer together, Zoe has hinted that their could be a romantic connection between them too, something Alex clearly fears.

Katie said: “Jamie’s the only one that has ever taken her seriously and ever respected what she’s saying and vice versa, so I think they need each other.

“It started off as a patient-doctor relationship and then they become kind of partners in crime a little bit and friends.

“I think there is potential for a romantic relationship develop. I don’t think that relationship [with Alex] actually satisfies Zoe.

“It doesn’t build her up, it doesn’t help her grow, it doesn’t make her feel very good about herself but she’s in it.

“Jamie believes her and listens to her. I think she sees in him what she’s missing in her relationship and of course, it’s quite a special connection so there’s definitely potential there for it to become something more.”

There’ll certainly be more twists and turns along the way but here’s hoping Jamie and Zoe can get their own back when the nail-biting thriller returns.

Tune in to BBC One at 9pm Tuesday, May 7 for the final episode of Trust Me.
