War against corruption: Group tells Nigerian workers what to do

- Nigerian workers have been urged to join the fight against corruption by the President Buhari-led administration

- War against corruption cannot be won without the sincere involvement of Nigerian workers, according to the president of ILDC

- President Buhari was once again commended for signing the minimum wage law

Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, president, Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), on Wednesday, May 1, urged Nigerian workers to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption for a prosperous economy.

Nnam told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that corruption was the biggest enemy of Nigeria and should be fought collectively, especially by workers. He described workers as the driving force of every economy in the world.

The ILDC president said: “As drivers of the economy any where in the world, workers are better positioned to influence governments positively or negatively.

“War against corruption cannot be won without the sincere involvement of Nigerian workers in shunning some alleged shaddy deals, particularly in civil service."

The group leader urged workers to always be patriotic for the sake of the country. He condemned acts of insubordination to management and bureaucracy, saying they were examples of indiscipline.

According to him, workers also should stop aiding some corrupt politicians in looting through alteration and bloating of figures.

Nnam, who reiterated his commendation to President Buhari for signing the minimum wage law, urged workers to reciprocate by being hardworking and sincere. He called on workers to believe in Nigeria, which he said was the only place they could call home.

NAN reports that workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in some countries and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of labourers and the working class. It is promoted by the international labour movement and occurs every year on May 1.

Senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki, had earlier lauded Nigerian workers for their contribution to socio-economic development of the country in spite of some economic realities.

Saraki in a goodwill message to mark the 2019 Workers’ Day celebration also commended the leadership and members of the organised labour for their patriotism in mostly choosing dialogue over industrial action in resolving trade disputes.
