Four Sherpa climbers scale Mt Pumori

KATHMANDU: At least four Nepali climbers successfully stood atop the 7,161-metre peak in the Mt Everest region this afternoon.

“Four Sherpa climbers reached the top of Mt Pumori opening a route to the summit point at 1:15 pm,” Tamding Sherpa, Managing Director at Himalayan Experience Pvt Ltd, said.

According to him, the rope fixing team of Sherpa climbers who scaled the mountain includes Dawa Steven Sherpa, Phurba Namgyal Sherpa, Nima Tenjing Sherpa and Naga Dorjee Sherpa.

With the opening of a route to the summit point, the only expedition on Mt Pumori this spring season would attempt to climb the mountain tomorrow, he added.

An 11-member team, under ‘Himalayan Experience Pumori Expedition 2019’, led by Mark Wynton Woodward from New Zealand, has obtained the climbing permit for Mt Pumori this season, a record at the Department of Tourism shows.

Other members of the team are — Russell Reginald Brice and Margo Lynne R Jones from New Zealand, Australian climber Jacobus Strydom, Stephan Erich Keck from Austria, and Martin Joseph Hewitt, Daniel Clements, Ian Michael Hocking, Terence James Byrne, David Robert Throne and Nadia Natalie Hocking from the United Kingdom.

After attempting to scale Mt Pumori, Mark Wynton Woodward would also lead a team of seven climbers to the world’s highest peak, Sherpa said, adding that Mark Wynton along with Martin Joseph, Daniel, Stephan Erich, Ian Michael, Terence James and Jacobus would attempt to climb Mt Everest.
