Zverev Stretches Unbeaten Run In Munich

Alexander Zverev began his bid for a record-breaking third consecutive BMW Open by FWU title in style on Wednesday, beating Juan Ignacio Londero 7-5, 6-1.

The World No. 3 extended his winning streak in Munich to nine matches after 64 minutes, breaking the Cordoba Open champion on five occasions to reach his fourth straight quarter-final in the Bavarian capital. Zverev improves to 13-3 at the ATP 250 event and has now won 10 consecutive sets in Munich, dating back to his opening-match comeback win over countryman Yannick Hanfmann last year.

"It was fun to play here in Germany," said Zverev. "The crowd is always very, very nice to me and amazing. I was looking forward to it and it was definitely special."

After trading multiple breaks of serve in the opening 10 games of the match, Zverev raised his level to book his spot in the last eight. The reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion claimed eight of the last nine games against Londero to confirm a quarter-final clash against Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship winner Cristian Garin.

"[Londero] is a very good player, especially on clay" said Zverev. "He won a tournament this year already, so [it is a] good start to the tournament and hopefully I can build on that."

Garin defeated sixth seed Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 7-5 to advance to his third ATP Tour quarter-final of the season after 84 minutes. The 22-year-old converted six of 12 break points to overcome the Argentine and notch his 15th tour-level victory of the season (15-6). Garin has already contested two ATP Tour championship matches on clay this season, picking up his maiden tour-level trophy in Houston (d. Ruud) last month after a runner-up finish at the Brasil Open in March (l. to Pella).
