May Day: Jubilation in Kano as state govt abolishes HND, degree dichotomy

- The dichotomy between the Higher National Diploma (HND) and BSc holders in Kano has been abolished by the state government

- Governor Abdullahi Ganduje said the decision to abolish the dichotomy is part of his administration’s effort to boost the morale of civil servants in the state

- The NLC chairman in the state also commended the administration for ensuring the payment of workers’ salary without delay, and also the payment of pensioners

The Kano state government has abolished the dichotomy between the Higher National Diploma (HND) and BSc holders in the state.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano made this known during the workers day celebrations at Sani Abacha Stadium on Wednesday, May 1 in Kano, NAN reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Ganduje said the decision to abolish the dichotomy is part of his administration’s effort to boost the morale of civil servants in the state. He said his administration was working assiduously in enhancing the welfare of civil servants.

Ganduje explained that arrangements had been completed for the implementation of the new N30,000 minimum wage approved by President Muhammad Buhari. According to Ganduje, his administration will continue to give priority to the welfare of civil servants and all residents of the state.

Kabiru Ado-Minjibir, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) chairman in Kano, lauded the efforts of the state government in enhancing welfare and working condition of civil servants.

He appealed to the state government to implement payment of allowances for workers of state tertiary institutions, as applicable to their colleagues in the Federal Civil Service.

The NLC chairman also commended the administration for ensuring the payment of workers’ salary without delay, and also the payment of pensioners.

Ado-Minjibir urged civil servants to reciprocate government gestures by being committed to duty through efficient productivity and better service delivery.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that following the decision of the federal government to end the dichotomy rift between Higher National Diploma (HND) and a university degree, more facts emerged that HND holders may be made to face some promotional bias.

Speaking in Abuja, the federal government, through the head of civil service of the federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, disclosed that the council submitted that an HND holder could henceforth enter into public service on grade level 08, the same entrance level for BSc holders.

The head of civil service of the federation, however, noted that someone who holds an HND cannot be promoted above level 14, except such a person acquired an additional degree for his or her promotion to officer cadre that can only terminate at grade level 17.
