A 13-year-old boy heroically saved his grandmother’s life after set herself on fire by smoking while hooked up to her oxygen tank.

Timothy Ewan’s quick thinking prevented a tragedy after he heard his grandmother Dianne Bungo’s calls for help on Monday in their Parma Heights, Ohio home.

Bungo, 75, had lit a cigarette while she had an oxygen tube around her nose, sparking the fire that engulfed her in flames, which began to spread around the house.

Ewan told WJW: ‘Whe was in the kitchen saying like, “Help Me!” she didn’t say she was burning.’

Timothy was the only one home with his grandmother. His mother, Michelle, had just left to pick up his siblings from school, although she said she believes her son acted more calmly to the emergency than she would have.

She said: ‘The fire went from her, down to the oxygen tube and he, I wasn’t home, he ran downstairs and unplugged the oxygen machine, undid the tube and started putting out the fire on her and on the house.’

‘I probably wouldn’t have done what he did. I probably would have panicked and he didn’t.’

Timothy explained that he knew leaving the oxygen machine on would make the situation worse.

‘Everything that she’s got on her, her shirt is burning down,’ Timothy said.

‘I rush to get water, I just grabbed a bowl as I’m shaking. I’m dumping water all on her shirt, there’s still fire.’

The teen was eventually able to put the fire out and firefighters responded to the home.

Firefighter Mike Alvarado praised the boy’s response, saying: ‘What he did is very courageous and we don’t really see people, some people are sometimes scared to take action, but he stepped up and did it.’

Bungo was severely burned in the incident, but she has a chance to recover thanks to her grandson.

‘You saved grandma, your house, and your life,’ Michelle Iwan told her son before planting a kiss on his head.
