The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) uncovered several weapon caches during a search operation in the southern region of the country on May 1, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
“After security monitoring by the army’s counter-terrorism units in the southern region, and in cooperation with the locals, quantities of heavy, medium and light weapons and ammunition … Were found,” a military sources told the state-run agency.
The weapons caches included loads of weapons and ammunition, including:
- Several rounds of the US-made SMAW shoulder-launched rocket weapon;
- Two Soviet-made Malyutka anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs);
- Three Soviet-made Fagot ATGMs;
- A Yugoslav-made M79 Osa anti-tank weapon along with several rounds.
Most of these weapons were supplied by the U.S. and its allies to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) under a “train and equip” program that was authorized by former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2014. The program was halted by President Donald Trump in 2017. However, the weapons found its way to the black market and to the hands of terrorist groups not only in Syria, but also in Iraq and even Lebanon.
