WICHITA, Kan. – Friends University senior Kara Simmons (SR/Lakin, Kan.) and junior Kortney Schutt (JR/Haysville, Kan.) have each been selected as KCAC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, with Simmons garnering the track nod and Schutt capturing the league's top field honor.
Simmons was all over the place this weekend for the Falcons at the Southwestern Relays and Drake Relays.
The Lakin, Kan. native posted a runner-up finish in the 100 Hurdles (16.15) at the Southwestern Relays before helping the Falcon 4 X 800 and 4 X 400 relay teams record NAIA "A" and "B" standard times at the Drake Relays.
The 4 X 800 team posted a Bronze finish and came in as the No. 1 NAIA team with a time of 9:21.06. The mark ranks second in school history and is the fifth best time in the NAIA this season. The 4 X 400 time is also the third best in program history and ranks eighth this season in the NAIA.
Schutt was also active this past weekend at the Southwestern Relays, winning the Hammer Throw (51.52m) while finishing second in the Shot Put (13.22m), fourth in the Discus Throw (39.85m) and sixth in the Javelin Throw (31.73m).
A native of Haysville, Kan., Schutt's Hammer Throw victory was a personal best and hit the NAIA "A" and "B" standard. Her Shot Put mark also qualified for the NAIA "B" standard.
The duo is now helping the Falcons prepare for the upcoming KCAC Championship meet, which is set for this weekend (May 3-4) at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan.
