Baseball America Update Shows Mets Prospects Rising

With the calendar turning to May and just about a month of the minor league season complete, Baseball America has released a major update to its top 100 prospects list.

No new Mets enter the fold, but the trio of Andres Gimenez (25, last 26), Pete Alonso (30, 40), and Ronny Mauricio (85, 91) have taken steps in the right direction.

Gimenez, the everyday shortstop in Binghamton, hasn’t had the flashiest of starts to the season, but the 20-year-old Venezuelan has been able to stay above water by hitting .279 with a .354 on-base percentage over his last 11 games. Gimenez’s strikeouts are up from where they were in 2018, but given his youth, still strong glove, and similarly lackluster April a year ago, there shouldn’t be any reason to panic.

Alonso’s success in the major leagues in April was well-documented, but he’s technically still about a week away from losing his prospect status. The 24-year-old’s nine home runs tied a franchise rookie record for any month and the second-most through the end of April by a rookie in MLB history (Jose Abreu, Trevor Story, and Aaron Judge hit 10).

Mauricio has done just about everything you can ask for from an 18-year-old making his full-season debut. He’s scuffled as of late, but his first two weeks resulted in a .345/.397/.414 line. This year will be full of highlight plays and teachable moments, but the organization thinks the world of this kid and we’ll likely be seeing him in the top 50 on lists like these as soon as this winter.

Meanwhile, Jarred Kelenic who was dealt in the Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz deal, moved down five spots on this list to 66 (previously 61) while Justin Dunn was not ranked in the top 100.
