Tottenham issue official update on Jan Vertonghen – player set to see neurologist

Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 1-0 defeat against Ajax in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final last night, although it isn’t necessarily the goal alone that has grabbed headlines today.

During the first half, Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen went up to challenge for a header when his side won a freekick near the opposition penalty area.

After taking a hefty blow to the head, Vertonghen fell to the ground and seemed to remain motionless for a good few minutes.

The medical team rushed onto the pitch to assess the player, eventually helping him off and continuing checks on the sidelines.

Once they were happy the player had not lost consciousness and was not suffering from any symptoms, he was allowed back onto the field of play.
