CSK vs DC: MS Dhoni’s brilliance, spinners hand Chennai Super Kings massive 80-run win over Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals suffered yet another collapse, losing six wickets for just 22 runs after the Powerplay overs, against Chennai Super Kings in Match 50 of IPL 2019 on Wednesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in a span of just 5.4 overs, in chase of 180 win, eventually succumbing to 99 all out, losing the match by 80 runs.
MS Dhoni starred with the bat scoring an unbeaten 44 of 22 balls, before effecting two stumpings. Imran Tahir returned 4/12 in his 3.2 while Ravindra Jadeja claimed 3/9 in his three. For DC, only Shreyas Iyer contributed anything substantial with 44 off 31 balls. With this win, Chennai reclaimed their top spot in the points table with 18 points in 13 matches.
DC were at a healthy position of 59/2 after the first six overs, but Tahir and Jadeja’s seven wickets derailed DC’s chase. Rishabh Pant, who had hit a handsome drive off Tahir to get a four was foxed by the flight of the South African, holing at long-off in the same over, caught by Dwayne Bravo. Then the procession started with Jadeja trapping Colin Ingram in front for one in the next over – the eighth of the innings. In the 10th, Tahir claimed Axar Patel and Sherfane Rutherford. Patel was caught at slips for one while Rutherford’s edge was pouched by Deepak Chahar at backward point. SCORECARD: CSK vs DC
Jadeja added two more in the 11th over with Dhoni effecting two sensational stumps to remove Chris Morris for a duck and Iyer for 44. Shane Watson ran out Jagadeesha Suchith and Tahir finished off the match with Dhoni effecting his third stumping in the form of Amit Mishra (8), as DC were all out in 16.2 overs. HIGHLIGHTS: CSK vs DC
Earlier, after CSK found themselves 27/1 in the first six overs, with Shane Watson recording an eight-ball duck, Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis kept the DC spinners at bay – three off them, Suchith, Patel and Mishra. Raina notched up his 37th IPL fifty, his 50th in T20s with the help of eight fours and a six while du Plessis was a tad slow, taking 41 balls for his 39 runs.
But their association laid the platform for a late fourish and Jadeja provided that with a 10-ball cameo off 25 runs, before falling to Chris Morris. Dhoni, who said he was not 100 per cent fit during the toss, finished off the innings well smacking 44 off 22 balls. In the last five overs, CSK ransacked 77 runs as DC were guilty of being sloppy with the bowl and the field in the death overs. Trent Boult’s final over was taken for 21 runs with Dhoni smashing two sixes and a four.
Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 179/4 (Suresh Raina 59, MS Dhoni 44*; Jagadeesha Suchith 2/28) beat Delhi Capitals 99 (Shreyas Iyer 44; Imran Tahir 4/12) by 80 runs.
