CSK vs DC: Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Capitals by 80 runs, move to top spot in points table

0

After Suresh Raina’s 50th T20 fifty, Ravindra Jadeja’s 10-ball 25 and MS Dhoni‘s unbeaten 22-ball 44-run knock powered Chennai Super Kings (CSK) 179/4, their spinners – Imran Tahir and Jadeja – ran riot as the home team bundled out Delhi Capitals (DC) for to secure a 80-run win in the 50th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.

DC were in a good position despite losing Prithvi Shaw early in the chase as Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Shreyas Iyer scored at a brisk in the powerplay. However, Dhawan’s dismissal in the final over of the powerplay, bowled by Harbhajan Singh, began the slide.

DC, who were 52/1 after 5.1 overs, were bundled out for 99 as Tahir and Jadeja ran through the DC middle-order, scalping three wickets each, including a two-wicket over each. While Tahir ended with four wickets, Jadeja ended the night with three wickets as CSK completed a comprehensive win, playing at home.

DC innings:

17th over: Tahir into his final over! That’s it.  The South African leg-spinner to end the proceedings as MS Dhoni takes the catch. DC bundled out for 99 as CSK register an eighty-run win.  DC 99 all out.

16th over: Bravo continues! As if losing wickets against the spinners was not enough, DC now lose a wicket of a run-out now. They are nine down and in danger of not crossing the 100-run mark. DC 99/9 (Mishra 7, Boult 1)

15th over: Tahir into his third over! Just three runs off it. DC move past 90. DC 92/8 (Suchith 6, Mishra 2)

14th over: Bravo returns! 3 runs from the over. CSK continue to strangle DC. DC 89/8. (Suchith 4, Mishra 1)

12th over: Jadeja into his third over! If Tahir can do it, then so can I, Jadeja must be saying. DC in a freefall here as Dhoni stumps Morris and Iyer. CSK spinners have derailed the DC chase and how. DC eight down. DC 85/8 (Suchith 1)

11th over: Tahir returns! Stop him if you can! Imran Tahir has struck twice in an over as DC lose six in chase. Axar and Rutherford depart. CSK are running riot here. DC 83/6 (Iyer 43)

10th over: Jadeja continues! Just five runs of the over. CSK are pulling back the things beautifully here and the spin is once again at the forefront. DC 80/4 (Iyer 42, Axar 9)

9th over: Bravo to bowl his first over! 8 runs from his first over. DC have moved past 70 but they are in a real need of a rebuilding and Iyer will hold the key. DC 75/4 (Iyer 39, Axar 7)

8th over: Jadeja into the attack! Three wickets in space of three overs. Jadeja has struck in his first over and Colin Ingram departs. DC have lost the plot here. DC 67/4 (Iyer 37, Axar 1)

5th over: Chahar into his third over! Iyer’s turn to go big as DC score 15 in the fifth over to move near fifty. The DC skipper has hit a six and a four. DC 49/1 (Dhawan 19, Iyer 26)

4th over: Harbhajan into his second over! DC and Dhawan are getting a move on here. 13 runs from the over as Dhawan hits a six and a four. DC 34/1 (Dhawan 16, Iyer 14)

2nd over: Harbhajan from the other end! Shikhar Dhawan gets off the mark as DC score 4 runs from the second over. DC 12/1 (Dhawan 3, Iyer 5)

1st over: Deepak Chahar to start the proceedings! He has struck in the first over yet again. DC have lost Prithvi Shaw. Early strike from CSK. DC 8/1 (Dhawan 0, Iyer 4)

CSK innings:

CSK were off to a slow start after DC skipper Shreyas Iyer has won the toss and asked the home team to bat. CSK ahd scored just three runs in the first three overs and could only score 27 in the powerplay. However, Raina’s 50th fifty in T20 cricket helped CSK innings find some much-needed pace.

While the left-hander and Faf du Plessis, who up a 83-run partnership, departed in quick succession, first Jadeja and then Dhoni, took the DC bowling attack apart as CSK scored 77 runs in the final over, including 21 runs in the final over, to put up a formidable total on the board.

20th over: Boult to bowl the final over! This is so typical CSK and MS Dhoni stuff. Finishing it off in some style. 21 runs off the final as Dhoni hits two sixes and a four. CSK have put up a formidable total on the board. 179/4  (Dhoni 44, Rayudu 5)

19th over: Morris to bowl the penultimate over! CSK lose Jadeja after a brisk 10-ball 25 but they have scored 18 from the over to move closer to 160. CSK 158/4 (Dhoni 25, Rayudu 5)

18th over: Boult to bowl! 14 runs off the over! CSK know more than a thing or two about how to make slow starts look irrelevant, at times. Jadeja tonks one for a biggie on the last ball. CSK 140/3 (Dhoni 13, Jadeja 25)

17th over! Morris into his third over! 10 runs from the over as Dhoni and Jadeja hit a four each. CSK are doing a fine job. While they have lost Raina, the last three overs have yielded 38 runs. CSK 126/3 (Dhoni 7, Jadeja 17)

16th over: Axar to bowl his third over! 14 runs off the over as Jadeja hits a six and a four on the final two deliveries of the over. CSK move closer to 120-run mark. CSK 116/3 (Dhoni 2, Jadeja 12)

15th over: Jagadeesha Suchith into his final over! 4, 4, 6, 0, W, 0. Suresh Raina departs after a well-deserved fifty. The left-arm spinner gets his second wicket of the evening. CSK have lost two wickets in two over. CSK 102/3 (Dhoni 0, Jadeja 0)

14th over: Axar to bowl his second over! Axar Patel gives DC their second breakthrough. He goes for a six but then has the last laugh. Faf departs for 39. CSK 88/2 (Raina 45, Dhoni 0)

13th over: Rutherford to continue. Du Plessis takes the aerial route and smashes it over long-off for a MAXIMUM. 12 runs coming from this one. CSK 81/1 (Raina 44, Du Plessis 33)

12th over: Amit Mishra will continue. Raina guides this one to the fine leg fence for a BOUNDARY, CSK need to get a move on here, Delhi are really applying the brakes. 8 runs again from this over. CSK 69/1 (Raina 42, Du Plessis 25)

11th over: Sherfane Rutherford into the attack and he concedes 8 runs from his opening over. CSK 61/1 (Raina 37, Du Plessis 22)

10th over: Mishra continues! Just three runs of the over. Mishra is doing well here. Just eight runs from his two overs. CSK 53/1 (Faf 20, Raina 32)

9th over: Chris Morris into his second over! 9 runs from the over as CSK reach fifty-run mark. Raina’s arrival has added some much-needed pace to CSK innings. From 3/0 from 3 overs to 50/1 after 9 overs. They have scored 47 in the last six overs. CSK 50/1 (Faf 19, Raina 30)

8th over: Amit Mishra into the attack! 5 runs of the over. CSK move past 40-run mark now. CSK 41/1 (Faf 15, Raina 25)

7th over: Jagadeesha Suchith from the other end! 9 runs from the over as Raina hits a four. The last three overs have cost DC 29 runs. CSK will look to up the ante now. CSK 36/1 (Faf 13, Raina 22)

6th over: Axar Patel to bowl the final over of the powerplay! 10 runs again! Raina’s arrival has helped CSK’s run-rate here. They are still scoring at under six. But that last two overs have yielded 20 runs. End of powerplay. CSK 27/1 (Faf 12, Raina 14)

5th over: Chris Morris to bowl his first over! Are CSK finally getting a move on here? 10 runs from the fifth over as Faf and Raina hit a four each. CSK 17/1 (Faf 11, Raina 5)

4th over: Jagadeesha Suchith continues! He strikes. Watson will be gutted with this. A half-tracker from the left-arm spinner and the CSK opener has found Axar in the deep. CSK 7/1 (Faf 6, Raina 1)

3rd over: Boult continues! This is super start from DC here. Three runs from first three overs. CSK need to go big in the next three now. CSK 3/0 (Faf 3, Watson 0)

2nd over: Jagadeesha Suchith to bowl from the other end! Another good over. Left-arm spinner starts well. CSK are not getting a move on as yet. CSK 2/0 (Faf 2, Watson 0)

1st over: Boult starts thoceedings. Good stuff to start with from the Kiwi pacer. Just one runs from the first over. CSK 1/0 (Faf 1, Watson 0)

Here’s what the captains – Dhoni and Iyer – said at the toss:

Dhoni: “Less dew today, because of the cloud cover. When you’ve played enough international cricket it’s never 100%. You’re always a little less than that. We were looking to bat first anyway. It’s a bit of a worry for the opposition, because I’ll be coughing at them (laughs). Me, Faf and Jadeja come in for Dhruv Shorey, Santner, and Murali Vijay.”

Iyer: “We’re bowling first. Hoping for dew in the second innings. The wicket looks dry so we have got three spinners in our side too. Suchith and Trent Boult come in for Ishant Sharma and Rabada. Rabada has some back issue, but it’s a precautionary measure, and Ishant has an ankle niggle.”

TEAM NEWS: Dhoni returns for CSK and so do Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Plessis in place of Murali Vijay, Mitchell Santner and Dhurv Shorey. For DC, they will be without the services of Ishant Sharma and Kagiso Rabada. Jagadeesha Suchith and Trent Boult will replace the two in the playing XI.

TEAMS:

CSK: Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

DC: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Colin Ingram, Sherfane Rutherford, Axar Patel, Jagadeesha Suchith, Sandeep Lamichhane, Amit Mishra, Trent Boult

TOSS UPDATE: Iyer has won the toss and DC have elected to bowl.

BIG NEWS: MS Dhoni is back to lead CSK.

PITCH REPORT:

Graeme Swann: Cracks all the way down, not a hint of grass. Lots of cracks, rock-hard. If the ball hits the many cracks, it will do a lot. A typical Chennai wicket – spin plays such a huge role for CSK. If you get 150-160, and get your spinners into the game, then you should be good defending it – though that is a very English way of thinking

Will he, won’t he?

No clarity whether MS Dhoni will play tonight or not. But he has arrived at the ground with the team. He has already missed two games in IPL 2019.

The battle for No 1

Both teams have tussled for the top spot on the IPL 2019 points table. Twice Delhi took over from CSK, and only once have CSK reclaimed it. Shreyas Iyer’s team is in form with six wins in their last seven matches, and they will be desperate to hold onto No 1 to avoid playing the Eliminator in the playoffs.

Here are the head-to-head records:

Number of matches played: 19

CSK wins: 13

DC wins: 6

While there’s an uncertainty over Dhoni, Jadeja, du Plessis are fit for selection

Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Plessis were also ruled out of the match against Mumbai, as they were both unwell. Now that the two players are recovered, they should be back in the CSK lineup.

Big question, straightway. Will MS Dhoni play?

MS Dhoni missed the last match against Mumbai Indians, and his impact was felt as the home team suffered a big loss. The CSK captain has been “pretty sick” during the week but his recovery is “progressing” according to CSK coach Stephen Fleming.

Hello and welcome to our match coverage of Match 50 of IPL 2019 between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday.

Dream 11 Tips and Predictions

Game 50 of IPL 2019 is between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and current table-toppers Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai today.

On an expected slow and slow surface, getting the right team combinations is critical. There is also dew expected, which brings focus on how many spinners are fielded.

Delhi Capitals are on top of the IPL 2019 points table and like CSK have confirmed their place in the playoffs. In MS Dhoni’s absence, CSK lost to Mumbai Indians and the iconic skipper is again in doubt for this match.

My Dream XI Team

Rishabh Pant (wk), Suresh Raina, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan (CAPTAIN), Sherfane Rutherford, Shane Watson (VICE-CAPTAIN), Dwayne Bravo, Axar Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, Deepak Chahar
