A Different 'Avengers: Endgame' Character Almost Died in Alternate Version of Script

SPOILER ALERT! Plot points from Avengers: Endgame ahead!

Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are opening up about how Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow almost didn’t die on the mission to get the Soul Stone and Jeremy Renner‘s Clint Barton/Hawkeye was almost the one sacrificed.

“Was there a possible outcome where Clint Barton (Renner) sacrifices himself instead of her?” the New York Times asked the screenwriters.

McFeely responded, “There was, for sure. Jen Underdahl, our visual effects producer, read an outline or draft where Hawkeye goes over. And she goes, ‘Don’t you take this away from her.’ I actually get emotional thinking about it.”

Markus added, “And it was true, it was him taking the hit for her. It was melodramatic to have him die and not get his family back. And it is only right and proper that she’s done.”
