IODAI Trails 2019
In the eye of the storm once more!
Our qualifying sailors, James Anglim, Joanna Berry, Kate Campion, Glenda Gallagher, Ciara Paul and William Walsh, with their support crews headed down to Royal Cork Yacht Club last Wednesday to compete in a proposed series of 12 races run over 4 days, with the ultimate prize being qualification for one of the IODAI national teams.
After Day One, Thursday, with 3 races completed, William Walsh produced a 12th position, Kate Campion had the her best performance to date, followed closely by James Anglim and Joanna Berry.
Storm Hannah was on its way and due for Landfall on Day Two, Friday, so the decision to race early before the storm hit our shores was fortuitous. Again, in windy conditions all our team performed admirably.
Day Three, Saturday, was “blown-out” with the frustration of waiting around all day till a final call was made to cancel at 2pm
Day Four, Sunday had an early launch time of 9am. With just 6 races completed, there was hope for a further 4 races on the final day, so there was everything to play for! Alas, with shifting winds of less than 5 knots, the sailors awaited till 12.30 pm before their first race began. A second race, resumed immediately afterwards to compete the series with just 8 races.
Congratulations to William Walsh. William qualified for the IDT 2 (International Development team) pictured here (centre) and will represent Ireland and MYC and the Europeans Test Event in Crozon, France, in June. We are all very proud of his achievement as like all our sailors, he trained very hard over the winter period.
Well done William.
This series consisted of 62 of the best sailors in Ireland. The total number of RET (Retired) was 4 for ALL races and not a single DNC (Did Not Compete) logged. That’s an incredible statistic and highlights the quality of the participants at this event .
Joanna Berry and James Anglim missed out by a single place in each of their categories but we’re very confident we’ll see these names on the winners podium over the coming season.
Congratulations to all our sailors and here’s to a successful 2019 season. More photos asap.
