Tim Sherwood: Tottenham need to follow Liverpool FC’s example in transfer market
Tim Sherwood says Tottenham Hotspur need to show the same willingness as Liverpool FC to invest significant funds in key areas of their squad.
Spurs will take on Everton at their new stadium in their final Premier League fixture of the season before their clash against Liverpool FC in the Champions League final next month.
Tottenham travelled to the Netherlands last week looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in north London after Mauricio Pochettino’s side struggled in their home fixture.
Spurs appeared to be heading out of the competition before Lucas Moura netted a second-half hat-trick to secure a sensational 3-2 victory over Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena.
Tottenham will take on Premier League rivals Liverpool FC in Madrid on Saturday 1 June as Spurs look to win the European Cup for the first time in their history.
Their opponents Liverpool FC have made big improvements over the past 18 months after Jurgen Klopp signed Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk in deals eclipsing £140m.
Former Spurs boss Sherwood wants to see Pochettino and Tottenham follow Liverpool FC’s ruthless approach in the transfer market.
“I think Tottenham need to look at what Liverpool have been able to achieve in the last 12-18 months and aim to replicate that success,” Sherwood told bWIN.
“Liverpool saw two weaknesses that needed to be rectified and they spent world-record fees on a goalkeeper and a central defender to resolve that problem.
“Liverpool didn’t tiptoe around the problem by spreading the cash a little here and a little there. They backed themselves to spend big, the new signings to work out and to come out of the other side a much better team.
“Tottenham need to quit signing a couple of £20-30 million players and bite the bullet with a £70-100 million star signing that can uplift the entire squad just by walking into the dressing room.”
Sherwood added: “I actually think Tottenham and Pochettino have a much tougher job to improve this squad than Liverpool and Klopp had because there are no obvious weaknesses that urgently need to be addressed. Pochettino does not get enough credit for trusting the current group of players and having the confidence in them to get to where they are currently.
“Tottenham have good players throughout their squad and it would be near impossible to improve the starting 11 when everyone is fit. Pochettino needs to create himself a problem by building a squad of excellent players rather than keeping with an 11 that picks itself on most weeks.
“You look at the strength in depth that Liverpool and Manchester City have and the headaches that Guardiola and Klopp must have trying to pick a team. That’s where Pochettino needs to get to if Tottenham are to win the Premier League.”
Tottenham have finished in the top four in the last four seasons under their Argentinian coach Pochettino to highlight their continued progress.
