A clean victory
A team from Homestead High School emerged victorious in the second Bike to the Future electric bike scholarship competition hosted by Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) and held at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
Team IYA Industries rode away with $7,500 in scholarships from the April 27 competition, which requires students to convert a regular bike to electric from scratch. Over the course of a few months, SVCE provided 16 student teams with up to $1,000 to explore and learn about electric bicycle technology by building their own e-bike from start to finish.
Extreme Robotics, at team from Milpitas High School, also made a good showing at the competition, placing fourth in the range test to identify the most efficient batteries. Students also had to present strategies to achieve a clean transportation future and showcase posters outlining how they built their e-bikes.
