Harris calls for Facebook regulation

0

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said on Sunday that Facebook Inc. deserves more regulation and that breaking apart the social network giant should be “seriously” considered.

In an interview on CNN‘s “State of the Union,“ the California senator said Facebook “has prioritized its growth over the best interests of its consumers, especially on the issue of privacy.”

“There is no question in my mind that there needs to be serious regulation … There needs to be more oversight,” Harris told host Jake Tapper.

“Especially during my years as attorney general of California, one of my greatest areas of focus on this issue has been on consumer privacy,” Harris said. “They have not been adequately informing consumers about where they are relinquishing their privacy.”

Asked if Facebook should be broken up, Harris said: “I think we have to seriously take a look at that.”

Harris's presidential rival Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has called for Facebook to be broken up, though Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) said Sunday he disagreed. “I don't think that a president should be running around, pointing at companies and saying breaking them up without any kind of process here,” he said on ABC.
