Manchester City wins second straight English Premier League title

There was no miracle for Liverpool this weekend.

Manchester City on Sunday captured it's second consecutive English Premier League crown after defeating Brighton & Hove Albion, 4-1. Liverpool, fresh off a thrilling comeback to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals, won their Sunday match, as well, beating Wolverhampton, 2-0. But they fell one point shy of the title.

It looked like there was some hope for Liverpool, who needed some combination of a win and a Manchester City loss or tie to leapfrog their competitor in the standings, early on in the day, when Manchester City fell behind Brighton, 1-0. But, in the end, City's talent won out and they cruised to victory in the second half.

Liverpool and Manchester City had been neck and neck all season long in what ended up being a two-team race, with City finishing with 98 points to Liverpool's 97. The next closest club in the standings was Chelsea who tallied 72 points on the year.

Liverpool, one of the most storied clubs in England — and the world — have never won the Premier League, which was founded in 1992. The club's last English championship came in 1990. The side will have a chance for redemption soon, though, when they take on Tottenham in the continent-wide Champions League final on June 1.
