Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool FC claim after 2-0 win over Wolves
Jamie Carragher hailed the current Liverpool FC players as the greatest Reds side of the past 30 years after Jurgen Klopp’s men finished as Premier League’s runners up on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds were offered brief hope of an unlikely Premier League title success when Sadio Mane broke the deadlock against Wolves before Brighton striker Glenn Murray netted against Manchester City.
However, goals from Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan sealed a 4-1 victory over Brighton to secure the Premier League title.
Mane scored his second of the game to seal a 2-0 victory over Wolves to finish with 97 points, which is the highest points tally of any runner up in Premier League history.
Liverpool FC will still have the Champions League final to look forward to on Saturday 1 June when the Reds take on Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.
Former Reds defender Carragher gave his assessment of Liverpool FC’s season and future prospects following Sunday’s 2-0 win over Wolves.
“This is the best Liverpool team we’ve seen in the past 30 years,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“All they have to do is continuously knock on the door. They’ve got the Champions League and will want to get number six over the line. Liverpool can challenge them. It’ll be difficult because you’re talking mid 90s to challenge now.”
Liverpool FC have now finished in second place on four occasions after 2002, 2009, 2014 and 2018.
Klopp has led the Reds to a top-four finish in the past three seasons but the German head coach is still waiting to win his first major trophy following his appointment in 2015.
The Reds were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final last week.
