Injury Update: Matz, Vargas Could Pitch Next Weekend In Miami

Mets’ left-hander Steven Matz threw a bullpen session on Sunday at Citi Field prior to the team’s rain out with the Miami Marlins.

Matz, 28 later this month, has been on the 10-day injured list after suffering radial nerve discomfort in his pitching arm.

The Long Island native has been logged a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA in seven starts. However, he does have a 5.10 FIP in 35.0 innings pitched.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Matz could return next weekend in Miami.

Fellow southpaw Jason Vargas could also return that weekend in Miami, according to DiComo.

The 36-year-old has been sidelined with a hamstring injury the last several days, but resumed running at Citi Field on Friday.

In seven games (six starts) so far for the Mets this season, Vargas has gone 1-2 with a 5.92 ERA, 5.73 FIP and 1.562 WHIP in 24.1 innings pitched. The California native got off to a rough start and continues to lose stamina early on in the game, but has made promising strides in the right direction as the season has progressed.
