Pochettino proud of Spurs “superheroes” as he looks ahead to CL final
Mauricio Pochettino claimed that this season has been Tottenham Hotspur’s best since he took charge of the club five years ago.
Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League after drawing 2-2 with Everton on the final day, thanks to Christian Eriksen’s free kick.
The season isn’t over for them just yet though, as they have the Champions League final against Liverpool to look forward to.
Pochettino said: “First I want to congratulate my players. The Premier League season is finished and now we have the Champions League final in Madrid. My players are superheroes, I am so proud of them. The way they have behaved so professionally and what they have achieved is unbelievable.
“Four top four finishes, four Champions League qualifications and the cherry on the cake will be the Champions League final.
“This group of players deserve so much credit. They have put so much unbelievable effort in. There have been many positives this season. The players and staff have shown so much character. We broke down all the doors when the circumstances were against us with the new stadium stuff. So to see their capacity to fight again makes me so proud.
“I think this is our best season in our five years. I am so happy, so pleased. What we have achieved this season – top four and final of the Champions League – it is difficult to assess now but in time the people will realise what we achieve.”
And Pochettino confirmed that he never had any doubts about his team achieving their goals.
“Always we were very positive. It’s about handling every situation. When you see the circumstances that happen we feel more than proud. Football is about taking risks, football is about being brave, football is about believing and having faith. And working hard, if you don’t work hard it is so difficult.
“Being positive in a difficult moment when a lot of situations happen during the season it would be easy to give up, but that is our strength to fight. Of course, after 10 months competing and fighting always you pay a little bit the consequence because it is normal, the effort… you always cross the limit.
“But of course, now to have three weeks to prepare the final, it is about time to enjoy. Of course we are going to be in Madrid to win but it is a time to enjoy, be professional and prepare the final in the best way. Some people say we need to try to go there to win, not to play the final. Try to win, because it is only one result what we need to put in our mind is ‘win, win or win’.”
Pochettino is wary though, that Liverpool’s hunger for victory in the final will not have diminished after their disappointment at missing out on the league title.
“No, they will be disappointed now but they made an amazing, amazing season and for sure a little bit unlucky because of the points they got. In other circumstances they would have won the Premier League.
“They have an unbelievable squad and an unbelievable manager in Klopp. Today they feel disappointed for sure but tomorrow, like us, they start to think about the final.”
