Emmanuel Petit makes plea to Arsenal about summer signings
Emmanuel Petit has admitted that he is hoping that the Arsenal board will back Unai Emery in the summer transfer window by giving him the funds he needs to strengthen his squad.
It has been something of a mixed first season for the Spaniard in charge of the Gunners following his appointment as Arsene Wenger’s successor at The Emirates last summer.
Arsenal have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League this season despite showing spells of promise at certain stages of the campaign.
The Gunners will attempt to end the season on a high when they take on Chelsea FC in the Europa League final in Baku on 29 May.
Petit is hoping that Emery’s experience in the competition will help, but the former Arsenal star is under no illusions that the Gunners are in need of some significant reinforcements this summer.
Writing in his column for Paddy Power, Petit said: “Valencia made it easy for Arsenal on Thursday night. The game went perfectly, even though Arsenal had some predictable problems in defence away from home. They responded well to the goals and showed the desire to score at the other end.
“I’m delighted to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette playing alongside each other up front.
“Often this season we’ve seen one of them on the pitch while the other watches from the bench. Now they’re producing goals and assists, and when Arsenal win games they’re usually the ones responsible for making it so.
“Unai Emery is a good coach and a good manager. He needs to be given time for players to adapt to his style and his methods. He’s a proven winner in the Europa League, and even if you consider it the little sister of the Champions League, he’s won trophies.
“So, I hope the Arsenal board will back him in the transfer market and allow him to brighten up his dressing room with better players, especially in defence.”
Arsenal are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as they look to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.
The north London side are aiming to win the Europa League this season after their trophyless campaign in Wenger’s final term in charge.
