Bafta TV Awards 2019: EastEnders win best soap as crisis-hit Coronation Street misses out on two gongs
EASTENDERS was crowned best soap as crisis-hit Coronation Street missed out on two gongs at the BAFTA TV Awards.
It was the latest blow for Corrie after the Sun Online revealed leading stars Kym Marsh and Faye Brookes had quit the cobbles.
Eastenders celebrated after it was crowned best soap last night at the Bafta TV awards – beating its ITV rival Coronation Street.
It was a big night for the BBC show, but it was a double blow for Corrie which also lost out on The Must-See moment to The Bodyguard.
Corrie Gail’s monologue lost out to The Bodyguard’s scene where Julia was killed.
The news came after there was a mass exodus from Coronation Street recently with a string of big names quitting their roles on the cobbles.
Fan favourite Kym Marsh announced she was leaving Weatherfield earlier this year after more than a decade playing Michelle Connor.
She’s set to bow out later this year but not much is known about how she’ll leave.
Meanwhile Faye Brookes shocked her fans last month when she announced on Twitter that she’ll be leaving Corrie in the near future.
Faye, who played Kate Connor, said: “Thanks to everyone for your amazing support, but after four fabulous years in Weatherfield, it’s time for me to explore new opportunities,” Faye said.
“I’ve loved playing Kate Connor, but she needs a break for a little while and so with a song in my heart I’m off to pastures new.”
