Tony Blair says No Deal Brexit will spark ‘a silent revolution’ that will ‘sweep away’ main parties

LEAVING the EU without a deal will spark “a silent revolution” that will “sweep away” both the Tories and Labour, Tony Blair has declared.

The former PM dubbed the call by hardline Brexiteers as “an extreme position” that would do “enormous damage” to the UK.

The economic misery it created would ignite a ballot box backlash against the two main parties who would be seen as responsible for it, the ex-Labour boss argued.

And though Mr Blair declared he will vote Labour at the May 23 euro elections, he urged supporters disillusioned with the Labour policy on Brexit to back the pro-Remain parties instead.

He said: “I do come across people who cannot vote for Labour, in which case I say ‘don’t stay at home – vote for any of the other parties’”.

Meanwhile his successor as PM Gordon Brown said yesterday that the divisions in the UK caused by Brexit are so “deep and pervasive” that they could take a generation to reconcile.

Mr Brown told an audience the vote to leave the EU had created a “fundamental disagreement” about the Britain people want – between being inward or outward looking.

At the launch of Christian Aid Week at Church House in Westminster on Sunday, Mr Brown said countries have to co-operate to solve the world’s problems such as climate change.

He added: “It raises the question of what it is to be British and this, I think, is at the heart of the debate that’s Brexit.

“It does now raise a fundamental issue and I will be honest, my worry is that the divisions in our country are now so deep and so pervasive that it could take a generation for us to reconcile these differences, bring people together and find a unified vision of our country and a sense of purpose and direction that takes us forward into the modern world”.
