NBC fall lineup: New shows with Jimmy Smits, Bradley Whitford

0

NBC unveiled a fall lineup on Sunday that features just three new shows headlined by familiar faces in Jimmy Smits, Bradley Whitford and Kal Penn.

With the moves, NBC officially kicked off “upfront” week in New York — an annual ritual in which the broadcast networks roll out their fall inventory for advertisers.

The new series include “Bluff City Law,” a family legal drama starring Smits as a widowed father who reunites with his daughter and fellow lawyer to battle injustice in Memphis, Tennessee. The other two shows are comedies — “Perfect Harmony,” starring Whitford as a former Princeton music professor who takes over a small-town church choir, and “Sunnyside,” with Penn playing a disgraced New York City councilman turned champion for a diverse group of hopefuls who dream of becoming American citizens.

Otherwise, NBC’s schedule looks pretty familiar, although acclaimed comedy “The Good Place” gets relocated to 9 p.m. Thursdays and Tuesday’s edition of “The Voice” moves to 9 p.m.

NBC is saving five established scripted shows for a midseason launch, including “Manifest,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Will and Grace,” “Good Girls” and “Blindspot.” The latter will return for a fifth — and final — season.

Also returning at midseason is “Little Big Shots” with a new host as Melissa McCarthy replaces Steve Harvey.

In other moves, NBC richly rewarded its top-rated family drama “This Is Us,” renewing the series for a fourth, fifth and sixth seasons.
