Members News – May Edition

FROM THE BUNKER
I will start this month’s news with the announcement (for those who don’t have Facebook) that Geoff Connelly has been promoted to full time Course Superintendent, Geoff has shown great leadership over the time he has had the reins and has more than proved his worth to the Club both he and his team have done an exceptional job out on course and the feedback from all the members really supports that.

Here he is with the Green Machine straight after breakfast last Friday (which is a treat Chef puts on for the boys each week) it’s also a good time for me to catch up with them all for a chat especially as they all tend to be in great spirits!

Two of the team, Shannon and Luke have gone back to studying and are currently training to be full time greenkeepers; we also have our new apprentice Zac who finishes up at school in November and will come on full time after that, Michael is also in the picture and he works with us every Friday which is part of our commitment to help people get back to work this sits in with our overall goal which is to upskill and provide career pathways for all our team out on course.

Which leads me nicely onto what’s happening out on course over the next few months?

We will be laying pipe from the 9th dam to the 13th over the next few months, as we have found that the most consistently good water we get is the grey water coming into the 9th once it’s in the 13th it will be used on the greens as we recognised via testing that there is too much sodium entering the greens via the irrigation system, this will keep the greens happy but also drought free.

Two new aerators will be purchased and placed in the 18th dam which will help to move this water around and keep it from stagnating; this is the water we use on our Fairways.

We are currently looking for solutions to the right hand side of the fairway on the 8th where the grass finds it hard to grow, we believe a new type of grass in this area will have a better chance of survival and will be trialling it over the coming months.

With all the hard work out on course we have seen memberships at their strongest for a long time, and that’s down to you so please continue to spread the word about how good the course is looking.

You will notice over the coming weeks that we will be installing recycling bins on course, there will be 9 of them in total and they will be on the odd holes so please put all bottles, cans and plastic into these bins, we will then transfer them to 4 main bins in the car park and they will be taken away by a third party who will pay us 7c a piece, this money will go back onto the course so please support it by doing your bit for the Club.

The biggest expenditure on course for the new FY will probably be a new spray cart as the current one is over 10 years old and in desperate need of renewal but at almost 80k it is certainly not cheap.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Kevin Brown for all his work on taking down the palms; he has done so well you would think he had a personal vendetta against them!

I hope the above helps keep you informed of what is coming up outside on the course.

And finally, this month I spent some time asking the hard questions to our Queen of the Bistro scene, Paige

And that’s me for another month, enjoy your golfing and I will see you around the Clubhouse soon

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Hi Golfers,

Club Championships are well under way, and there have been some great scores so far. Good luck to all of those still in contention. I know I’m not.

The course continues to improve slowly. I am particularly happy with the progress of the “problem” greens. They all now have a full coverage and the putting surfaces are now very consistent with all the other greens. Well done to Geoff and his team.

Just a reminder to everyone, that the practice fairway and putting greens are considered part of the golf course and dress regulations apply. Thongs and t shirts are not permitted in these areas, so please don’t put us in the awkward position of having to say something to you.

The Division 2 Pennants team won the pennant this year. Such a great team of players. Well done to you all.

Match and Greens are trying to increase the numbers of players on Sundays. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know and the committee can look into it. Sundays are such a great mixed day and we want more people to come out and enjoy themselves.

Don’t forget to repair your pitchmarks.

Good Golfing

Greg Hill.

SPGC GOLF MEMBER’S PROMOTION

THE PRO SHOP

Welcome members, exciting times at the moment with lots of highlights.

Men’s club champs are well underway and I am very pleased to say the course is in fantastic condition for our main events.

Cody Davis leads the way with 69 – 67 6 under par and is chasing his 3rd straight title. Boyd Johnson is 8 adrift in 2nd but a good effort by the old boy. All other grades are too hard to call so let’s see how the next two weeks unfold.

Our ladies championship starts on the 20th, good luck to all our ladies competing. Also with our ladies we have record numbers off to Country Week in Bargara and Bundy so let’s hope for some good results from the girls.

Deyen Lawson as you all know has been playing the European Tour since November. This week he plays this season’s first event in Europe and it’s a big one… The British Masters. It will be on Fox Sports so let’s cheer him on, also, scores are available on the European Tour website where I am proud to say Surfers Paradise always gets a mention as Deyen’s home club.

We have some exciting demo and fitting days this month: May 9th – Callaway, May 23rd – Wilson + Tour Edge and May 30th – Mizuno + Taylor Made so even if you’re just curious come along and see what is available.

We have been blessed by our suppliers with some great images on our windows which certainly dresses up the shop and club house vista from the alfresco area.

My round of the month goes to Cody Davis for his 4 under par round on Sunday with an honourable mention to Dan Quinn who had even par on the back 9 on Saturday.

Our Ladies Lets Golf programmes are going extremely well with over 20 new ladies coming to the classes which we have run in conjunction with Golf QLD.

THE WORKING BEE

Hi Everyone,

What a fantastic time of year bringing such beautiful weather with it.

We have been quite active as well, all the sprinkler heads on the front nine have had grass trimmed around them making them more noticeable and far safer.

The car park surround has been cleaned as well as the gutter on the halfway house which was causing problems.

Damages on an old buggy shed have been repaired, and path edging continues.

Removal of troublesome cocos palms is also continuing.

Beautifying the Course is our main priority over the next few months and every little bit helps.

Good Golfing.

ALL SPORTS

The field competing for the April Monthly Mug was considerably smaller than usual. The worthy winners nevertheless, were: A-Grade Blaze Chapman and B-Grade John Logan.

May I remind our more senior members that the 105 Rule does not apply on Medal ( MUG ) days. This is in keeping with the SPGC rules.

The Harry Nesbitt Memorial Trophy game (4BBB) was played on Tuesday 23rd April. The trophy displayed below by President Ron Echin was won by Ron Macdonald and Russell Kho with 46 points.

There is considerable interest in our next away day on 28th May at Arundel Hills, so get your applications in asap.

Happy golfing.
