Occasionally, we follow Maigret out of Paris and into the countryside or onto the coast, when he has been called in to provide some big-city expertise after the rural calm has been shattered by a bloody deed. In this book we find him at Étretat, a seaside village in Normandy, and Simenon has a new environment in which to display his command of atmosphere.
