Coronation Street writer says soap was robbed of must-see moment of the year after being beaten by Bodyguard

CORONATION Street writer Jonathan Harvey claimed the soap was “robbed” after losing out to Bodyguard at last night’s TV BAFTAs.

The ITV soap also went up against Killing Eve, Doctor Who and Peter Kay’s Car Share in the fight for Must-See Moment.

But it was the chilling scene in which Bodyguard’s Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes, was assassinated during her public speech that wound up taking the prize.

But Corrie scriptwriter Jonathan clearly disagreed with the decision and claimed Gail Platt’s monologue on the suicide of Aidan Connor should have won.

Sharing a selfie with actress Helen Worth, who plays the cobbles stalwart, he wrote: “Me and Dame Worth #baftas (we woz robbed, obvs).”

It was arguably one of the toughest categories of the night, as drama Killing Eve has gone on to receive global success, as has Bodyguard.

And the night didn’t improve as the programme also missed out on its second nomination for Best Soap to EastEnders.

It was the latest blow for Corrie after the Sun Online revealed leading stars Kym Marsh and Faye Brookes had quit the cobbles.

Lucy Fallon, Katie McGlynn, Brooke Vincent and Tristan Gemmill are also turning their backs on the soap.

An insider told The Sun: “No one has been particularly happy since former show boss Kate Oates left.

“There are lots of scheduling issues and the workload has become very difficult to manage with six episodes a week.

“There are now lots of unhappy people who are jumping ship but many of them are ‘putting a spin on it’ publicly because they don’t want to upset their mates left trying to save the show.”

A source said: “Working weekends was introduced a few months ago and that was the last straw for some people.”
