Ukrainians Made 33 Million Trips to the Schengen Area Within Two Years

Two years after the Council of the European Union decided to abolish visas for Ukrainian citizens traveling to the Schengen Area for short-term visits, the Ukrainian diplomatic mission to the EU announced through Facebook that Ukrainian travelers made 33 million trips to the Schengen countries within this period. Over 2.5 million of these trips were visa-free.

“Citizens of Ukraine have made more than 33 million trips to the EU and the Schengen zone. In particular, more than 2 million Ukrainian citizens have used the opportunity of the visa-free regime. These are phenomenal figures. The main thing is that with every trip, Ukrainian citizens are bringing home new knowledge and contacts that help the country implement European integration processes irreversibly,” the statement posted on Facebook says.

The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who takes a lot of pride on the visa liberalization agreement reached between Ukraine and the Schengen Member Countries during his presidency in 2017, also took to Facebook to shows his joy for the very high number of Ukrainians traveling visa-free to this territory.

“2,575,390 Ukrainians have already personally felt all the benefits of a visa-free regime with the EU! The number of our compatriots who can visit the countries of the European Union and the world without visa documents is growing daily. And there are more than a hundred of such countries,” President Poroshenko wrote on Facebook, adding that the world is getting more open for Ukraine every day.

Ukraine reached an agreement on visa liberalization with the Schengen countries in May 2017. Since then on, its citizens had the opportunity to travel to the Schengen states for tourism and business without the need of obtaining a visa.

Currently, Ukrainian citizens can travel visa-free, with a visa-on-arrival or an e-visa to 128 world countries. Based on that, the Ukrainian passport is currently listed as the 40th most powerful in the world, out of 105 positions.
