John Cena defends WWE writers and says it’s up to wrestlers to create magic
JOHN CENA has defended WWE’s creative team and says it is up to the wrestlers “to create magic”.
Fans have been critical of the storylines on both Raw and SmackDown over recent months amid a ratings slump.
And since the formation of rival promotion All Elite Wrestling, several WWE superstars have left or requested their leave from the company.
With over six hours of programming content to provide each week, WWE’s writers face a tough task to keep producing fresh and exciting stories on a weekly basis.
And wrestling legend turned Hollywood actor Cena has come out swinging in support of Vince McMahon’s trusted lieutenants.
During an interview with Fightful, the 42-year-old hit back at claims creative does not have enough content for all of its talents.
And he insisted it is up to individuals to make sure they shine instead of relying on a script.
‘FIGURE IT OUT’
Cena said: “I hate hearing people say ‘creative has nothing for me’ or ‘they’re not writing good things for me’.
“You have a small crew of writers who has to write a mass amount of segments and they churn out general stories.
“The best, most brilliant situation in the world is, two guys are going to have a match tonight, figure it out.
“Or, getting something that is not good because then you can take it and go with the writer and make it your own.”
Cena, who is currently on hiatus from the ring, added: “I’ve worked with so many people on our writing team from the head writer himself to a guy on the first day on the job.
“It’s up to the talent to take something that is, no offense, s****y, and make it good.
LATEST WWE NEWS
“I have never been handed a written piece of paper that I go ‘this is great’. It’s always ‘how do we turn this s**t into something that makes sense.’
“I’ve seen guys like Miz do it, guys like Seth do it, AJ when we were able to creatively bond for a while, and Bray.”
Cena’s last appearance inside the squared-circle came at last month’s WrestleMania when he shocked everyone by returning as his early Dr of Thuganomics persona to leave Elias laying.
