6 things we learned from Sunday's episode of 'Game of Thrones'

0

Spoiler alert: This article is a recap of “The Bells” and episode 72 of Game of Thrones. The story will include spoilers from the episode and all episodes prior.

Daenerys Targaryen trusted no one. Apparently, that justified killing everyone. By the end of Game of Thrones‘ “The Bells” episode, ash rained down on charred bodies and leveled buildings in King’s Landing. Dany will rule Westeros with fear. But it’s hard to imagine her ruling for long.

Surely, more people escaped than Arya, who fled in the final scene of this Sunday’s Game of Thrones episode. The survivors won’t be pleased to serve under this murderous tyrant. It was as Varys (R.I.P.) predicted — Dany, once the breaker of chains, intends to enslave her subjects with fear and fire.

1. Daenerys officially qualifies as a “Mad Queen”

During Dany’s assault of King’s Landing, Drogon’s fire was so strong and so pervasive that it set aflame the remaining wildfire stores. And thus, Dany used the wildfire from Mad King Aerys in a moment when she bore an unfortunate resemblance to her father. She was acting just as crazily as her father. Fittingly and incidentally, she used his wildfire to “burn them all.” Ominously for Dany, those were her father’s final words.

She had a few choices when the bells, indicating forfeiture, began to ring. The most obvious would have been a peaceful approach: imprisoning the surviving Lannister troops before killing Cersei and Jamie. Instead, Dany unleashed her weapon of mass destruction, Drogon.

2. The Battle of King’s Landing was an absolute breeze — until Dany made it more complicated than it needed to be

She didn’t blow her three-dragon lead.

She managed to pull off a win in King’s Landing, even after losing Rhaegal and Viserion. Her win was decisive and quick. The Iron Fleet was down in a matter of moments. The Golden Company entered the oven after that. And then Dany and Drogon swiftly took down the scorpions. The Lannister troops, despite their surrender, died with the rest.

It was a surprisingly easy win after episodes of galavanting around Essos and Westeros. But then once the win was in-hand, Dany tarnished her victory with the slaughter of innocent people. That’s when her victory felt like a harbinger for an upcoming loss.

3. Cersei Lannister turned into a slightly sympathetic character at the end

Let’s not excuse her for blowing up her enemies, some of whom weren’t bad people. Margaery and Loras Tyrell were solid people considering the moral corruption that surrounded them. Missandei didn’t deserve to die.

Without a doubt, Cersei is evil.

But while the city burned and people ran for their lives, I couldn’t help but think: At least Cersei didn’t do this. So when she and Jamie died under the collapse of King’s Landing, I felt a twinge of sympathy for Cersei and her unborn child.

The Night King was evil. Cersei was a tyrant. The only remaining villain is the newest one: Dany. And she may be the most formidable.

4. The Clegane Bowl was fine

This episode, as a whole, didn’t disappoint (unlike the previous episode). The Clegane Bowl, which fans have been long awaited, was a fun piece of the episode. It wasn’t magnificent, with wild twists and turns like the battle between The Viper and The Mountain. But it was a battle of blunt force which is fitting for these brothers. Even if Sandor inexplicably allowed Cersei to scoot by him, he managed to get the revenge which he sought for most of the show. His suicidal efforts brought his and The Mountain’s tragic storylines to an end.

And just so everyone’s clear, the Cleganes died along with Jamie and Cersei Lannister, Euron Greyjoy, Varys and Qyburn.

5. Did Arya just ride off into the sunset?

She seemed done with King’s Landing and, perhaps, Westeros as a whole. If there is one person on her list, it’s Dany. That might be the only reason Arya sticks around — she might fear her brother cousin (Jon) is too stupid or afraid to kill Dany. It would bring truth to Melisandre’s line that Arya would close brown eyes, blue eyes and green eyes. (Dany has green eyes.)

Still, the white horse felt slightly like a white flag. Arya looked depleted and faithless. Perhaps she is ready for something new. Perhaps she’s ready to travel west of Westeros “to see the edge of the world.”

6. You’re up, Jon Snow

He’s go to do something, right?

He didn’t want to rule, but Dany is truly unfit to serve as queen. Jon may change his tune in the final episode. Likely in fear of Dany, he led the retreat out of the city, and could run all the way to Winterfell. But that could bring Dany back to The North, where she would continue her path of destruction. Jon will probably stick around to face Dany in an attempt to calm or, more likely, kill her. Will get help from Tyrion or Arya?
